Bainbridge Island Japanese American Memorial

Executive Order 9066 authorized internment camps for Japanese Americans during WWII. In 1942, Civil Exclusion Order No. 1 was issued, designating Bainbridge Island as the first area from which American citizens would be forced to leave. This memorial wall re-tracesthe steps, where on March 30, 1942, two hundred twenty seven men, women and children — two–thirds of them American citizens — were forcibly removed from their homes, rounded up by US Army soldiers armed with bayonet-fitted rifles and boarded onto a ferry to Seattle. The memorial is located nearby Pritchard Park which offers wonderful access to the beach with a view of Eagle Harbor.
